Motion Picture Director, Screenwriter. Best known for directing a string of cult horror pictures during the 1970s. He developed a perception for artistic aptitude at an early age and following service with the Royal Air Force, he taught art and worked as a copywriter. Films would be his ultimate goal to pursue, as he initiated his entry in the entertainment industry with a position in the art department with British TV. This led to a placement as production designer with the popular series "The Avengers". He marked his feature directing debut with the comedy "Just Like a Woman" (1967, which he also provided the story) and followed it with several episodes of "The Avengers". He directed the 1970 film adaptation remake of the Emily Bronte novel "Wuthering Heights". He found his niche in films of the horror genre, beginning with "And Soon the Darkness" (1970), followed by "The Abominable Dr. Phibes" (1971) and its sequel "Dr. Phibes Rises Again" (1972), both starring Vincent Price. Further credits include "The Last Days of Man on Earth" (1973), "The Devil's Rain" (1975) and the TV-movie "Revenge of the Stepford Wives" (1980). (bio by: C.S.)
