After a long and eventful life on Sunday last, Mrs. Mary McGannon left the friends on this side and passed to that better land to join her husband who died a number of years ago. Mrs. McGannon was born in Kentucky, near Louisville, on June 14, 1807, consequently at the date of her death she was 87 years, 2 months and 12 days old. In her early life she experienced the dangers, hardships and privations which were the lot of the hardy pioneers of Kentucky, and it was like a romance to hear her recount them in her own and quaint and modest style. In 1819 she, with her parents, moved to the then wilderness of Indiana, in the vicinity of the now city of Vernon and again faced the vicissitudes of advanced pioneer life. At the age of 17 she was married to John McGannon, and with him shared the blessings of a happily wedded life until his death occurred in this city (Litchfield) in 1875. In 1860 she accompanied her husband to Meeker County, the then frontier of Minnesota and settled on a piece of land a few miles southwest of where this city now stands and for the third time in her life faced the dangers of savage mendacity. When the Sioux massacre occurred in 1862 she was driven from her home and with her children sought a place of safety further east (Forest City) but that terrible event cost her the life of one of her sons who was killed by the Indians north of Kingston while on his way to Fair Haven. After the most imminent danger was over she returned to her desolate home and resided there until Litchfield was started, when Mr. McGannon purchased property in town and moved his family here to live. All through her life Mrs. McGannon was celebrated for her nobleness of character, kindheartedness and Christian charity; few there are in this vicinity who will not admit they are under deep obligation for kindnesses shown by "Aunt Polly" as she was lovingly called by nearly all who knew her. She was the mother of 12 children, nine of whom grew to man and womanhood, viz: Julia, married and living in Indiana; P. C. McGannon, residing in Vernon, Indiana; Thomas, Sarah, Henry, Martha (Mrs. Waggoner), Mary (Mrs. Blackwell), Catherine (Mrs. Koerner) all of this city and James who was killed by the Indians. The funeral was held at the Christian Church, on Tuesday, services conducted by Rev. L. A. Pier of Excelsior.
