BEAVER SPRINGS - Sarah E. Balmer, 87, of Beaver Springs, died at 4 a.m. on Sunday, Feb. 8, 2009, at The Manor at Penn Village, Selinsgrove.

She was born Sept. 29, 1921, in Spring Township, Snyder County, a daughter of the late Frank and Florence (Klingler) Hartman.

On Dec. 25, 1940, she married the late Russell B. Balmer, who passed away July 23, 1999.

She was a member of Beaver Lutheran Church, Beaver Springs, where earlier in life she was a member of the Lutheran Church Women, taught Sunday school and participated in the annual Christmas party that the women provided for Arbor Cottage of the Selinsgrove Center.

She graduated from the former Beaver Vocational High School, class of 1939.

She was active in the Ladies Auxiliary of the Beaver Springs Fire Co., and bowled with the shoe factory.

In 1986, she retired from the former Beaver Shoe Co. She had also worked for many years at the former Bojalad's Printing. She enjoyed bingo, bowling, knitting, crocheting, ceramics and making Christmas caramels.

She is survived by a sister, Mona Lou and her husband Nelson Gilbert, Beaver Springs, and a brother, Fred and his wife, Lois Hartman, McClure.

Also surviving: four nieces, Kim Rigel, Kathleen Houtz, Sally Pathmore and Jill Stewart; a nephew, Scott Hartman; three great-nieces, Kristen Williams, Christine Stewart and Kelly Colm; seven great-nephews, Nathan Rigel, Wayne and Terry White, Bradley and Andrew Hartman, Justin Stuart and Todd Colm.

She was preceded in death by a son, Wayne Balmer, Nov. 1, 1965, during the Vietnam Conflict; two brothers, George and Robert Hartman; two sisters-in-law, Bertha Balmer and Jean Hartman; and a brother-in-law, Lowell Balmer.

A service of Christian burial will be held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at Beaver Lutheran Church, 18207 Route 522, Beaver Springs, officiated by Rev. Dr. Lois D. Martin.

The interment will be in the Adamsburg Cemetery, Beaver Springs. The family will receive friends at the church from 9:30 until the time of the service on Thursday.

Arrangements are by Aurand Funeral Home, 316 W. Market St., Beavertown.
