Death: Feb. 18, 1895

Joseph was born his parents' old homestead (opposite Deacon's Station) where four generations of his family had lived before him, holding the property under a deed dated 1682. When he was seven years old, his parents moved to another part of the farm, a few hundred yards closer to Burlington, where Joseph continued to live until a few years before his death, when he moved into a new house that he had built close by the older house. He never married until he was into his 40s.

Joseph was a Whig until the birth of the Republican Party, at which time he embraced the principles of that new party and joined it. He voted for every Whig Party candidate for President from John Quincy Adams down to 1856; after which he voted for every Republican candidate for President from Fremont to Harrison. He enjoyed reading the Bible, and did that a lot until his eyesight failed in later life.

He was sickly for about two weeks prior to his death, said to be the the longest illness of his life. His funeral was at Broad Street Methodist Episcopal Church in Burlington, NJ.
