Robert Roan was born in 1877 in Dumbarton, Scotland, the son of Agnes Clachrie & Samuel Raleigh Roan. He had 2 siblings - a brother John (1881-1941) a sister Jane (1880-1882). In 1883, Samuel, Agnes and their surviving children, John & Samuel, immigrated to the US, settling in Westerly, RI where Samuel worked as a granite cutter. Robert married fellow Scottish immigrant Catherine McKenzie in Westerly, RI shortly after 1900, and they had 4 children: Agnes McKenzie Roan, Minnie Roan, Catherine S Roan and Robert Roan, Jr. Like his father, Robert worked as a granite cutter. He died in 1948 at the age of 70.
