Daughter of William Meeks and Maria Caterina (Catherine) Giannini.

William was born in Hanover County, Virginia to Mollie West and (unknown) Meeks.

Catherine's parents were Giovanni Antonio Giannini (Anthony Gianniny) and Maria (Mary) Domenica Modena, both born in the town of Fibbialla, Lucca, Italy. They immigrated (with then 2-year old Catherine) in 1773 in the employ of Phillip Mazzei, who was attempting to establish a wine and olive oil business in Virginia. Mazzei settled in Albemarle County, on a farm adjoining Thomas Jefferson's Monticello, where Anthony would later be employed as a gardener.
