He was born in Big Spring, TX Sept 15, 1915. He was a graduate from Big Spring High School.
He played football as a tight end for Texas A&M. He was then a surveyor for Shell Oil and entered the Army Air Corps in WWII.
He completed flight school in San Angelo, TX he was a B-17 Pilot in the 358th Hell's Angels Squadron stationed in Molesworth, England.
He was shot down Oct 14, 1943 on his second mission when his target was the Schweinfurt ball bearing factory and spent two years as a POW in Stalag Luft III, escaping twice, before liberation by General George Patton's Fifth Army. He was a recipient of the Distinguished Flying Cross.
He married Pauline Hildreth in England.
He retired from the Air Force in 1963 and they settled in Austin, TX where he was a farm and ranch realtor and owned of Advertising Aids of Austin.
He was a deacon at Bannockburn Baptist Church.
He was preceded in death by his wife of 64 years, Pauline Sanders, parents, three brothers and three sisters.
He is survived by his children, son Dr., Lance V Sanders and wife Sheryl; granddaughters, Allison and Madison,all of Austin; daughter, Mindy Sanders and husband Jim Darden of Lakeway; nephew, George Cobirn and wife Teresa of St. Petersburg,FL; sister in law Dr Nell Sanders of Big Spring TX.
Interment was at Austin Memorial Park Cemetery.
Weed-Corley-Fish Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.
