Birth: Jun. 2, 1838
Death: Feb. 18, 1882

Oft-quoted Confederate letter writer. Born in Richmond; educated at University of Virginia. Taught briefly in Hanover County; later a Richmond lawyer. Artillerist during the Civil War. Served as an aide to General Reuben Lindsay Walker and to A.P. Hill. Commanded an artillery battery. Post-War, he was a farmer in Louisa County, a newspaperman in Richmond, and a member of the Virginia legislature. His war-time letters were published in 1882 and are often quoted and familar to students of the Army of Northern Virginia. His nickname was "Ham."
