John T. Girgan, born Feb 1836 in Gatehouse, Ayrshire, Scotland (per 1861, 1871 Scotish Censuses, 1900 US census). He married Margaret Cardwell 15 July 1879 in the Presbyterian Church at Milngavie, New Kirkpatrick, Dunbarton, Scotland. He is listed as a cotton spinner living at Allander Place, Milngavie. She is living at Highland Row, Milngavie. His parents are listed as Thomas Girgan, cotton spinner, and Isabelle (Carson) Girgan. Her parents are Daniel Cardwell and Emily (Conroy) Cardwell. They were married by Alex. McNaughton, Minister. Witnesses: Thomas Girgan [his brother] and Ann Chambers. The marriage was registered 18 July 1859 at New Kirkpatrick, Dunbarton, Scotland.
John appears to have emigrated about 1879 by himself. He is in the 1880 US census living with his brother, Thomas, Thomas's wife Jane and their children in Newark, Essex, New Jersey. His wife and children apparently immigrated in 1881 per US census data. John Girgan worked in Newark at the Clark Thread Company as a foreman. He and his wife had eight children. After his wife's death in 1903, John lived with his daughter Mary Cardwell (Girgan) Kirk, moving with her to Syracuse, Onondaga, New York, in 1924 where he died 6 May 1928 in the Hospital of the Good Shepard.
His obituary is available at www.fultonhistory.com in the Syracuse Journal of Monday, May 7, 1928.
