William M MERRITT was the last of two children born to parents, Herbert C and Amelia L Ochsner Merritt of Newark, NJ. Following the termination of their marriage, Amelia married Gustave G Kradell, Sr, of Newark, NJ, and young William and his older half-brother George W Turner, lived in their household until William was old enough to support himself. William joined the U. S. Navy in Jul 1906 and remained on active duty until Sep 1922 serving on at least nine ships, among them: USS West Virginia (ACR-5), USS Lamson (DD-18), USS McCall (DD-28), USS Hart(DD-110) and the USS Belknap (DD251). William remained in the naval reserve and was recalled to active duty during the early days of WWII when he was assigned to the US Naval Forces operating on the island of Bermuda. Chief Water Tender William M MERRITT had over 30 years of service when he left active duty due to a medical condition prior to end of the war. William married Della Lamoureux about 1913 and raised a family, the descendants of whom, survive today.
