Louis Harold Crank, 70, passed away unexpectedly at home March 10, 2004.
Born in Norfolk, he was the son of Arthur Elmer and Bertie Hicks Crank. He graduated from Granby High School in 1953 and from Trinity College in Clearwater, Fla. in 1956. He later received a BS degree from Old Dominion University in 1971. He retired from Norfolk public schools in 1997 after teaching for 41 years, first at Granby High School and later at Booker T. Washington High School. Most recently, he was a member of Colonial Baptist Church, Virginia Beach. For many years he attended Tabernacle Church of Norfolk where he taught a fourth grade boys Sunday school class. His love for the word of God led him to become a member of the Gideons Norfolk East Camp, which places Bibles in public places. At home he could often be found working in his yard. He enjoyed traveling and since retirement he and his wife drove twice cross-country. Sitting in a rocking chair on the porch of Lake Lodge in Yellowstone National Park was one of his happiest memories.
He took great delight in his family and leaves to cherish his memory his wife of 47 years, Frances L. Crank; his daughters, Rebecca S. Foss and her husband Gene A. Foss of Norfolk and Ruth C. Ambrose and her husband G. Raymond Ambrose of King of Prussia, Pa.; his grandchildren, Melissa A. Wofford and husband J. Rufus Wofford, Luke, Melinda, Kara and Zachary Foss; sisters, Virgie L. Wakefield of Massachusetts and husband Bob, B. Sue Vaughan of California and June C. Matal of North Carolina and husband Vince and Ella Mae Jones of Norfolk; sister-in-law, Pat M. Crank; and his brother, Gene F. Crank of Norfolk and his wife JoAnne. He was predeceased by his parents and a brother, Walton A. Crank.
The family will receive friends today from 7 to 9 p.m. at Smith and Williams Funeral Home, Norfolk Chapel. A me- morial service will be held Sunday at 2 p.m. by the Rev. Daniel Davey. Burial will follow the service at Forest Lawn Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Union Mission, 120 Brooke Ave., Norfolk, VA 23510 or to Gideons International, Norfolk East Camp, P.O. Box 12468, Norfolk, VA 23541-0468.
