BETTENDORF — Alice Alex of Bettendorf died March 13, 2012, in Des Moines, following a brief illness.
Burial in Davenport Memorial Park.
Alice was born in 1912 to Luella and Lawrence Halton in Sioux City and she died just short of her 100th birthday.
She married Arthur Alex, a supervisor at the Rock Island Arsenal, on July 13, 1940. Her nickname was "Snookie." She enrolled at the University of Iowa in the fall of 1930 after graduating from Davenport High School. She joined Kappa Kappa Gamma sorority while at Iowa. Mrs. Alex had several jobs in Davenport and finally settled in for several years as a telephone operator. In the late 1950s she went back to school to finish her college degree, graduating from Marycrest College in 1960. She taught kindergarten in Bettendorf until retiring in 1977.
For 25 years after her retirement, she traveled the world with her former sorority sister, Jean Smith, sometimes spending winters in apartments overseas.
Mrs. Alex devoted her retirement years to the Putnam Museum in Davenport where she served as a volunteer guide, and to St. Luke's Hospital in Davenport where she volunteered at the information desk. She also was a volunteer with the Miss Iowa pageant and hosted many of the contestants in her home.
She was a life-long member of First Presbyterian Church and was a member of numerous clubs and organizations.
Mrs. Alex is survived by her daughter-in-law, Lynn Alex (Steven Lensink); sons, Tom (Diane) Alex and Don Alex; four grandchildren, Allison (Mike) Carroll, Brendan (Sonya) Alex, Stacey Alex, and Kimberly Alex (Carlos Vergara); and one great-grandchild and "two more on the way." She was preceded in death by her by her husband, parents, son, Robert, and sister, Mary Jane Reid.
