Peter Straight's year of birth as given here came from the 1937 WPA cemetery reading of the Straight Cemetery of Fairmont District, Marion County WV. If it is correct, then his mother could not have been Elizabeth Ann Dragoo Straight, wife of Jacob Straight (d: 1786). Peter was likely born in Monongalia County VA, but he could have been born in western Pennsylvania. Others report that Peter's mother may have been Elizabeth Wood, sister or daughter of Nicholas Wood, who died with Jacob Straight and Elizabeth Straight Dragoo during or shortly after the 1786 Indian attack.
From "Monongalia County (West) Virginia Deedbook Records 1784-1810 (Old Series Vol. 1-4)", edited by Rick Toothman, (Bowie MD: Heritage Books), 1994, pp. 43-44 & 368-369:
21 November 1797. Peter and Elizabeth Strate to Elizabeth Strait Sr. 65 acres, one-third of a 195-acre tract on Finches Run. No adjoiners named. Elizabeth Sr's dower in the real and personal property of Jacob Strate, deceased, her husband, is noted. This conveyance to her in fee simple. Consideration: love and affection for their mother. Signed: Peter [mark] Straight, Elizabeth Straight. Witnesses: none. Acknowledged in court. Del: to Jasper Wayette, 16 March 1803. Recorded: OS 1:327, 329 [page 328 omitted in numbering].
9 October 1809. Elizabeth Straight, widow, to Peter Strait. 65 acres, one third of a 195 acre tract at Finches Run, adjoining John Dragoo. Consideration: $100. Signed: Elizabeth Strait. Witnesses: none. Acknowledged in court, October 1809, Del: to him, 2 SEP 1812. Recorded: OS 4:502-503.
So, Peter's parents were Jacob and Elizabeth Straight of Finches Run, and his mother died after OCT 1809, without remarrying. His father Jacob was likely the Jacob Strait shown in the 1782 Census enumeration for Monongalia County VA as having 10 persons in his household; and he died before 30 JUL 1789, when John Stead patented land on Buffalo Creek which adjoined the Heirs of Jacob Strait and John Dragoo. This also suggests that the Jacob who married Elizabeth Dragoo Straight was not the same person as the Jacob who father Peter Straight.
One of the best accounts of the 1786 Indian raid appears in George A. Dunnington's "History and Progress of the County of Marion, West Virginia", (Fairmont WV: 1880), pp. 61-62.
Peter Straight married Elizabeth Bayles Ice, widow of Abram Ice, on 22 APR 1794, in Monongalia County VA. They had seven children together: Jacob C. Straight who married Jane Musgrave; William Straight who married Elizabeth Hayes; Phebe Straight who never married; David Straight who married Delila Rice; Elizabeth Straight who drown as an infant; Jesse Bayles Straight who married Ada Henry; and John Meeks Straight who married Emillia (aka Amelia) Robinson.
