| Birth: | Nov. 1, 1880 | | Death: | Jul. 13, 1954 |  Sportswriter. Born in Murfreesboro, Tennessee, he was journalist known for his elegant prose and classic poetry sports writing. After graduating from Vanderbilt University Tennessee, he took newspaper jobs at the Atlanta Journal and Cleveland News, before a sportswriter. During the 1920s, writing was published in newspapers around the country and broadcast on the radio. Covering all sporting events, by the 1930s, he became known as the "Dean of American Sports Writers". He also published "Songs of the Salwart", a book of his sports poetry.
