| Birth: | Jul. 1, 1908 | | Death: | Apr. 24, 2004 | Cosmetics Magnate. Born Josephine Esther Mentzer she turned a kitchen blended face cream business into an international cosmetics empire. Along with her husband Leonard Lauter (later Lauder) they turned the Estee Lauder into a household name in 1953. Over the years they added lines and new products, fragrances such as White Linen and Cinnabar, the Aramis line of men's toiletries and the Clinique line of fragrance-free, allergy-tested products. As their privately held company grew they involved their sons Leonard and Ronald. Leonard took over as CEO in 1982, the year before their father died. Forbes magazine estimates the net worth of the Lauder sons at $5.1 billion. Estee Lauder's public life dwindled after she broke her hip in 1994 and she died of cardiopulmonary arrest in her Manhattan apartment. (bio by: Ron Moody)
