Confederate Officer and Politician. Attended Emory and Henry University. Lawyer in Liberty and member of the Virginia state legislature. Enlisted as private, Company A, 2nd Virginia Cavalry May 11, 1861. Served as a volunteer aide-de-camp to General Jubal Early during the Civil War. Elected to the Confederate Congress in Dec. 1862. Post-War, was elected to the U.S. House of Representatives. Also was a lawyer in Norfolk and in Washington D.C. Served as the U.S. Solicitor General.
