PVT US ARMY WORLD WAR II
Harold E. Mallard (Smiley) April 17, 1921 - February 3, 2012 Harold was born April 17th, 1921 into an original California land grant family, the Higueras. He lived all of his 90+ years in and around Bakersfield. As the eldest of five brothers, Harold helped support them and his mother (Bessie Mallard) in the early days of the depression. He attended local schools and graduated from Kern County Union High School in 1939. Harold wed Esther Ghilarducci more than 70 years ago on October 12, 1941. He worked for the telephone company and served in Army communications during World War II. They had two children, Gary (Carolyn) Mallard and Kay (Steve) Uhalt. Harold is survived by his wife Esther and his children, as well as his five grandchildren: Gennifer Devaney (David), Cassie Griffin (Leland), Geoffrey Mallard, Beau Braisher and Joshua Uhalt; six great-grandchildren, plus his four younger brothers: Wimpy, Billy, Dick and Elmer Mallard. Smiley and Esther entered the restaurant business in the late 40's with the ownership of the II Trovatore, then the Regent Cocktail Lounge downtown. After the 1952 earthquake, they re-opened the Regent Restaurant and Bar in the Hillcrest Shopping Center. They ran the establishment for over 30 years with solid success and a loyal clientele. Everyone loved "Smiley". He was always there to bail out customers and even provide loans to them when needed. Harold enjoyed playing golf and spending time on the Central Coast. He belonged to Kern County Golf Club and was also a member of the Elks Club for over 50 years. In his retirement he could be found on the golf course, working in his garden or tending his famously super-sweet oranges! (Bakersfield Californian 2/14/2012)
