"Lt Pequeen Rites Will Be Held At Corry, Pa, Tuesday - Funeral services for Lieutenant Merritt Pequeen, a former Olean resident, will be held Tuesday morning (May 3, 1949) at Corry, Pa, at eleven thirty o'clock. Burial will be in the Pleasant Valley Cemetery. Lieutenant Pequeen was born in Olean, April 1, 1923, and attended Olean schools. He moved to Corry in 1939, and joined the Pennsylvania National Guard, Company A, at the age of sixteen. He then went to Indiantown Gap and qualified for officers candidate school, and received his commission. From there he was sent to Arkansas and then transferred to the Gilbert Islands. He was killed (June 20, 1944) on Saipan, while serving with Company C, 165th Infantry, Twenty Seventh Division. Lt Pequeen is survived by five sisters, Mrs John Hoke, Castilia, O; Mrs Henry Roden, Corry, Pa; Mrs Mack Miller, Buffalo, NY; Mrs Eugene Wigant, Belmont, NY, Mrs Guy Yeager, Olean, NY; three brothers, Jerry Pequeen, Clare Pequeen and LaVerne Pequeen, all of Buffalo, NY."
