Singer. Born Ulysses Nunn in Birmingham, Alabama, he was the original bass vocalist for The Coasters. In 1957 the Los Angeles-based group was offered a lucrative record deal on the condition that they relocate to New York, but Nunn refused to make the move. With Will "Dub" Jones replacing Nunn as bass, The Coasters went on to score seven Top Ten hits, including the Lieber & Stoller classics "Yakety Yak" (1958) and "Charlie Brown" (1959). Nunn settled for second-hand notoriety. In 1962 he formed "Bobby Nunn's Coasters," a knockoff group that played club gigs and had some success in Germany. In January 1987, two months after Nunn's death from a heart attack, The Coasters were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Nunn's grave is in the communal section of Evergreen Cemetery, one of the few there with an individual marker. (bio by: Bobb Edwards)
