Zachariah was son of Daniel Whiton and his wife Jael Damon. He married Keziah Wilder (1747-1834) on December 12, 1770 in Hingham, MA. They nine known children.

Zachariah was a carpenter, and in 1774 was a constable. He lived at Liberty Plain in Hingham, Massachusetts. He served in the Revolutionary War as a sergeant in Captain Pyam's Company, Colonel Solomon Lovell's Regiment, from March 4 to March 8 in 1776, and November 14-29, 1776; also as 2nd Sergeant in Captain Lincoln's Company Colonel Lovell's Regiment December 14-18, 1776. Also as 2nd Lieutenant in Jospeh Baxter's Company, Colonel Macintosh's Regiment, detached from militia for expedition to Rhode Island. Also in Captain Elias Whiton's Company, Colonel Symms' Regiment, March 9 to June 9 in 1777. Also as 1st Lieutenant in Captain Jabez Wilder's Company, 2nd Regiment, Suffolk County Militia, March 10, 1779. He is also mentioned with credit in Thatcher's Military History.
