(Sometimes Alabama is given for her place of birth on census records.) After her husband died during the Civil War, Martha purchased land in Rabbit Hill, Navarro County, Texas (now Currie, Texas) as a home for herself and her children. This is where she later died. Her husband was James Jordan McGaw Sr., born January 16, 1816 in South Carolina (date of death, location, and circumstances are unknown, although oral family history says he died as a Confederate soldier during the Civil War).
