DAVENPORT — Betty Lea Sloan Shannon Nickels, 89, of Davenport, passed away Tuesday, March 6, 2012, at Friendship Manor.
Burial in Davenport Memorial Park Cemetery.
Mrs. Nickels was born on January 20, 1923, in Ottumwa, Iowa, the daughter of Melvin E. and Lorena A. (Chandler) Sloan. She married Harry E. Shannon, Jr., on March 20, 1942, in Clayton, Missouri. He was killed January 3, 1964, during a robbery at S&N Royal Blue, where he was in partnership with Marvin Noll.
After her husband's death, she continued the partnership. She later worked for Johnnies Market. She married Wallace K. Nickels on January 24, 1994, in Rock Island. He preceded her in death in 2011.
She was a loving mother and grandmother and enjoyed good times with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She also enjoyed caring for the elderly.
Survivors include daughters, Shirley Buckwalter (Bob), Indianapolis, and Cynthia Dopler (Kim), Davenport; daughter-in-law, Tarrilee Shannon, Coyne Center, Ill.; sisters, Eleanor Schenbricker, Rock Island, and Shirley Gramenz (Duane), East Moline; sister-in-law, Beverly Shannon, Spring Valley, Calif.; 10 grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.
In addition to her husbands, she was preceded in death by her parents, brother, William, and son, Richard.
