President of Finland from 1956 to 1982. Central figure in the Finnish political scene from the 1930s, prime minister (1950-53, 1954-56). He was also a prolific columnist, whose opinions influenced public discussion and political maneuvering. As a member of parliament, he represented the Agrarian Party (Maalaisliitto) - a natural political home for Kekkonen due to his rural background.
