On December 13, 1917, Joel and Girdie Lou Pope MccNeil had a daughter they named Sylvia Mary. She was born in a rural area known as Mackey Bend, Knox, Kentucky. The nearest Post Office was about three miles away at King, Knox, Kentucky. Official records use the Post Office for the address so her birth certificate says she was born in King.
She attended grade school and two years of high school at Mackey Bend. Then she had to move to Barbourville, the county seat of Knox County to complete high school/
After graduating from high school she attended McNeil Business College in Barbourville. After obtaing a Secretarial degree she went to work for the Department of Agriculture. When The United States entered World War II Sylvia saw an opportunity for adventure and joined the US Army Women's Air Corp. Sylvia worked as a secretary handling transfers. In this position she managed to transfer herself to Europe. She was stationed in Belgium.
After the War ended Sylvia worked for Eastman Kodack in Oak Ridge Tennessee, but again looking for adventure, she went to California where her Aunt was living. There she met Mark James Freeman from Idaho. They were married 14 October 1947 in Los Angeles California. Here they had their first child
After living in California for a couple of years they moved to Idaho where Mark's family lived. They lived in the Basalt area for a few years, where they had two more children, then they moved to Ririe where their last child was born.
Sylvia worked at the Ririe Cafe then started working as a night clerk at the Flamingo Motel in Idaho Falls. She eventually worked her way up to the office manager She worked there until the business was sold to a corporation who did managment from Corporate offices in another town. She then went to work as a Secretary for the Ririe School District. She worked in the elementary school and then the high school. The children called her Aunt Syl and loved her.
In 1981 Sylvia and Mark died together in an automobile accident. They were buried in the Ririe-Shelton Cemetery.
