Born in Long Beach, California, after serving in the US Army during the Korean War, he made his debut as a catcher for the New York Yankees on September 17, 1954. For seven seasons, he played with the New York Yankees (1954-1955), Washington Senators (1956-58), Boston Red Sox in 1959 and the Detroit Tigers in 1960. He ended his career with a record of 281 hits, 31 homeruns, 153 runs batted in, a 2.30 batting average and is one of only four regular catchers to field a perfect 1.000 for a full season.
