Bertha Mae McDermott

Bertha Mae McDermott, 72, of Etowah, made her transition to be with the Lord on Wednesday, March 7, 2012, at Emerald Hodgson Hospital after a brief illness.

"Bert" was well known for her candor, cooking, personality and her devotion to her children and grandchildren. She was a member of Mt. Olive A.M.E. Zion Church and worked at Woods Memorial Hospital for many years. She enjoyed fishing, playing cards and having fun with her friends. She was preceded in death by her parents George and Louise Boyd; her husband, William McDermott; five brothers, Delton Boyd, George Boyd, Kenneth Boyd, Lyndus Boyd and James Boyd; two sisters, Ernestine Jackson and Louella Alston; and her father-in-law Pat McDermott.

She leaves to cherish her memory five children and their spouses, Minister Phyliss Prigmore, who was her devoted caregiver, and her husband, William Jr., of Riceville, Etta and the Rev. R.T. Smith of Riceville, Minister Sandra and Minister Hulton Lewis of Chattanooga, Delores Jackson of Atlanta, Ga., and Benny Jackson Jr., and his special friend, Kimberly Parris, both of Etowah; grandchildren and their spouses, Dawn and Eustice Perkins, Jan and Tiffany Armstrong, Chad and Lacy Armstrong, Darrell Jackson, Tobin Jackson, Calvin Smith and Andrew Smith; one sister, Frances Pierce of Athens; her mother-in-law, Oggie McDermott of Athens; three sisters-in-law and one spouse, Patsy and the Rev. Eilhue H. Looney and Lola Arnold, both of Athens, and Jessie Boyd of Charleston; special nieces, Deborah Mayfield and Sandra Elrod, both of Etowah; special nephews and one spouse, John and Ann Boyd of Charleston, and Bucky Jackson and James Moss, both of Etowah; 13 great-grandchildren; and a host of other friends and relatives.

Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Monday at Mt. Olive A.M.E. Zion Church with the Rev. Joe Moore and Minister Sandra Lewis officiating. Burial will follow in New Zion Cemetery.

The family will receive friends from 1 to 2 p.m Monday at the church.

M.D. Dotson & Sons Funeral Home of Athens is in charge of arrangements.
