EMORY, Va. Reelia Watson, age 85, a well known resident of Emory, died at his home on Saturday, March 3, 2012, after a brief illness. Born in Alvarado, Va., on March 16, 1926, a son of the late Love and Caloney Watson, he grew up in the Beech Grove community of Washington County, Va. In the midst of the depression, the son of tenant farmers, he left school in the sixth grade to work with them to support his family until he entered the Army in 1944. On March 16, 1945, a member of Company G, 346TH Infantry Regiment, 87th Infantry (the Golden Acorn) Division of Patton's Third Army, he celebrated his 19th birthday on the banks of the Mosella River in a river assault crossing near Koblenz, Germany. Nine days later his division crossed the Rhine River into the heart of Nazi, Germany. He was awarded the Combat Infantry Badge, and for meritorious achievement in ground operations against the enemy. European Theatre of Operations, during the Central Europe Campaign he was awarded the Bronze Star Medal. He was later awarded a First Oak Leaf Cluster (a second Bronze Star Medal) for meritorious achievement in ground combat against the armed enemy in the European African Middle Eastern Theatre of Operations. He never shared the circumstances for which these medals were awarded. He received the European African Middle Eastern Campaign Medal with two bronze service stars, the World War II Victory Medal and the American Campaign Medal. After being discharged in March of 1947, he returned home and married Mattie Sue Ryan in February 1948. He enrolled in the Washington County Technical School and obtained his G.E.D. He was a former employee of Lincoln Industries in Damascus, Meadowview Furniture, Dr. Pepper of Marion, the Norfolk and Western Railway, and Monroe Calculating in Bristol. In 1966 he entered the car business and was the owner operator of Meadowview Motors until his death. He was a member of the Greenfield Baptist Church, a member of Bristol V.F.W. Post No. 6975, a charter member of the Meadowview Ruritan and had served as a delegate to the Virginia Democratic Party state convention. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife of 56 years, Sue R. Watson; a son-in-law, William Donald Pless; brothers, Ernest, Austin, Robert and Charles; and sisters, Gladys (Gene) Smith and Mae (Delmar) Heath. Survivors include three daughters, Beth (Donnie) Pless of Emory, Lynda (Dennis) Staton and Amy (Randy) Whistler, both of Bristol, Va.; one son, Reelia Ryan Watson of Emory; eight grandchildren, Heather (Kevin) Hill of Bristol, Va., Amy Pless of Emory, Suzanne Staton of Myrtle Beach, S.C., Travis (Ryiah) Staton of Bristol, Va., Andy Pless of Emory, Seth Barrett, and Hannah Barrett of Bristol, Va., and Brittney (L.J.) Boothe of Bristol, Tenn.; four great-grandsons, Noah Hill, Parley Staton and Kellen Staton all of Bristol, Va. and Ethan Boothe of Bristol, Tenn.; one brother, James L. (Jim) Watson of Abingdon; and one sister, Margaret Rucker of Columbus, Ga. Funeral services for Reelia Watson will be conducted at 2 p.m. Thursday, March 8, 2012, at Greenfield Baptist Church with the Rev. Tom Capron officiating. Interment with full military honors by Bristol V.F.W. Post No. 6975 and the Virginia Army National Guard Honors Team will follow in the Holston Conference Emory and Henry Cemetery at Emory. The family will receive friends from 6 to 9 p.m. Wednesday evening at the Frost Funeral Home. Pallbearers will be Tony Surber, Ronnie Heath, Richard Buddington Jr. and grandsons. Honorary pallbearers are David Sandefur, J.C. Crigger, Eugene Mink, Leighton Sprinkle, Bob Steele, Charles "Eddie" Rainey, Rick Stumbo, Sammy Campbell, Greg Salyer, Robert Kifer, Chester Poore, Vernie Williams, Dennis Godfrey, Fred Newman, J.D. Morefield, Vernie Seymore, Larry Neese, John Garrett, Dr. Martin Monahan and Dr. Simmons. Flowers will be accepted or memorial contributions may be made to the Greenfield Baptist Church, c/o Lynn Miller, 30091 Hawthorne Dr., Meadowview, VA, 24361.
