|Death: ||Apr. 6, 1862|
From family history files written by Ruth (Brune)Mangelsdorf, granddaughter of Joseph:
"Joseph Menzer went to the Civil War and was slightly wounded in the hand. When he was sent home on furlough, he was told that he did not have to return because of his wound and because of the death of his daughter and the illness of his son. He told his wife, however, that he was in almost as much danger at home and that if he were killed at home, she would receive nothing from the government. If he were killed in war she would receive a pension. He returned to war, but the neighbors told his wife that he never fired another shot before he was killed in the battle of Pittsburg Landing on April 6, 1862."
Joseph served with Co.H 18th Missouri Infantry.
