Graduated from William and Mary College, Williamsburg, Virginia, was admitted to the bar and commenced practice in Westmoreland County. He was a member of the State house of delegates, 1826 to 1832 and was elected as a Whig to the Twenty-eighth Congress, March 4, 1843 to March 3, 1845. Unsuccessful candidate for reelection, he resumed the practice of law and also engaged in agricultural pursuits. In 1852 he was president of the Virginia Agricultural Society and again a member of the State house of Virginia delegates, 1861 to 1863.
