Hiske was the daughter of Tjebbe Muntinga and Jantje Hoving of the Netherlands. She was born September 15, 1820 in Grijpskerk, Groningen, Netherlands.

Hiske's first marriage was to Wiebe Loumes Mellema. Wiebe passed away on August 23, 1847. It should be noted that three of their daughters died in 1884 within three days of each other in November and December 1884. The three daughters were Mantje Mellema, Martje Mellema and Hiske Muntinga.

Her second marriage was to Harm Holwyn Bats (#86297595) on April 12, 1850 in Grootegast, Groningen. Their marriage was witnessed by Harm's brothers, Albert, Jan and Otto and her brother, Schutter Vander Slop. At that time they lived in Duezum which was a short distance from Grootegast.

Harm and Hiske had six children:
Holwein, Jan, Albert, Lammert, Martin and Tettje.

Harm and Hiske emigrated to the US in 1882 and settled in Grand Rapids, Michigan.

The spelling of the last name Bats was changed about 1900 to Batts. Some children adopted the new spelling and some retained the single T.

Credit is due to Herman Batts for the family history.

Hiske Bats is my husbands great great grandmother.
