Poppy Mitchell
April 18, 1918 - March 3, 2012

Life Legacy

Poppy X. Mitchell, 93, of Ottawa passed away Saturday, March 3, 2012 at LaSalle County Nursing Home.

Funeral Services will be at 10:00 a.m. Wednesday at All Saints Greek Orthodox Church, 102 N. Broadway, Joliet, Illinois with Reverend Stefanos Bithos officiating. Burial will be in Elmwood Cemetery in River Grove, Illinois. Visitation will be from 5:00 – 8:00 p.m., Tuesday, March 6 at Ottawa Funeral Home, 1111 LaSalle Street, Ottawa, Illinois.

Poppy was born April 18, 1918, in Chicago, Illinois to Constantine and Eleni (Sampalis) Paleologos. She married Xenophon William Mitchell on June 24, 1945 at Annunciation Greek Orthodox Church in Chicago; he died August 29, 2006. Poppy and Xenny shared 61 years together, re-newing their vows on June 24, 2005 on their 60th wedding anniversary. They were role models for devotion to each other and their family.

Poppy attended and graduated from Budlong Grade School in Chicago. She went to Senn and Amundson High Schools in Chicago, graduating in 1936. She then attended and graduated from Northwestern University with a Bachelor of Arts and Columbia University in New York with a Masters in Journalism.

She went to work with Greek War Relief and began her career in politics and public service. She worked for 33 years as Chief Clerk of the Probate Court of La Salle County in Ottawa and helped many attorneys and businesses navigate through the court system.

She was Grand President of the Daughters of Penelope from 1946-1948, a Greek-American philanthropic Womens' Organization. She ran for U.S. Congress for the 15th Congressional District of Illinois in 1964; she was a past member of Ottawa BPW, Democratic Party of Illinois, Board member of Reddick Library, and Sunday School teacher and member of All Saints' Greek Orthodox Church in Joliet.

When Poppy ran for U.S. Congress in 1964, she ran against the Republican candidate's widow, Charlotte Reid. The then 15th Congressional District was weighted as heavily Republican and while Poppy did not win the election, she was the first Democratic candidate to win LaSalle County. Many school age Ottawan's followed the "Poppy Wagon" and began their entrance into politics. Poppy met with Lyndon Johnson at the Democratic Convention and in the Oval Office, Harry Truman, John Kennedy, Teddy Kennedy, to name a few of the government officials she encountered in her lifetime. She was supported by her hometown and even Fritz Gerding, President of First National Bank of Ottawa had a Poppy bumper sticker on one side of his car and a Barry Goldwater on the other, saying everyone should support the hometown girl!

Her most memorable role to us, however, was as wife, mother, and grandmother. She was an avid and talented baker, cook, making Greek pastries, canning, excelling at jams and preserves, and she was known for her awesome parties and famous sweets' table. East Prospect Avenue where our family has lived for sixty years was always full of life and activities and celebrations. Poppy helped raise her daughter and her grandson in the great neighborhood instilling strong values, a sense of pride in helping others, and giving to the community.

She is survived and lovingly remembered by one daughter, Daphne Mitchell (John) Cunningham of Ottawa; one grandson, Alexander Konetzki of Chicago; two nieces, Nina Paleologos of Evanston and Stacy (Steven) Debrauwere of Park Ridge; and one nephew, Van Paleologos of Chicago.

She was preceded in death by her husband; her parents; and one brother, Van Paleologos.

Pallbearers will be George Booras, Nicholas Booras, Robert Eschbach, Christopher Caprio, John Cunnigham, and Alexander Konetzki.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to: All Saints' Greek Orthodox Church, Joliet, Illinois, Ottawa Tree Board, or National Hellenic Museum of Chicago.
