|Birth: ||Apr. 1, 1669|
|Death: ||Mar. 29, 1763|
Pelatiah was the son of Sampson and Mary (Butterworth, of Dorchester, MA) Mason. The parents were devout Baptists. Pelatiah was one of 13 children. His sister, Mary is one of our ancestors thru another line of ours. Other siblings were: Noah, Sampson, John, Samuel, Sarah, James, Joseph, Bethiah, Isaac, Pelatiah, Benjamin and Thankful.
Pelatiah married Hephzibah Brooks on May 22, 1694 in Swansea, MA. They had 11 children: Job, Elihu, Elisha, Samuel, Aaron, Anne, Hepisbeth, Pelatiah, Russsell & John. Their daugher Elizabeth is our descendent.
Three sons were pastors of the same church at different times.
A tradition, probably from the records gathered by a grandson of Pelatiah Mason, says that he married a second, third and fourth wife and lived with the last wife for twenty-one years. There appears to be no recorded proof of any but the first marriage and the conveyances by Pelatiah Mason recorded after the death of his wife Hepsibeth, make no mention of a wife nor is there any release of dower. He was a tanner and shoemaker by trade and his homestead was on the highway leading from the Great Bridge, now known as Myles Bridge, to Mattapoisett, now Gardner's Neck in Swansea. He made no will, having distributed his real estate among his sons some years prior to his death.
A quote from the New England historical and genealogical register, Volume 18:
"The record of the death of Pelatiah Mason, copied from the town Books of Swansey, is as follows:
'Pelatiah Mason of Swansey, deceased this life March ye 29, 1763, aged 94 years, and the last survivor of six bretheren; the youngest was 70 years of age when he deceased.' "
