Joseph M. Sudsburg
Birth: Mar. 17, 1827
Death: Apr. 8, 1901
Baltimore City
Maryland, USA

Civil War Union Army Officer. Born in Bavaria, he attended Austrian military school, and subsequently fought with Polish revolutionaries, the French Army in Africa, and with the Baden patriots. After the failed 1848 Revolutions, he fled to Switzerland, then came to United States, working as wood carver in Baltimore, Maryland. When the Civil War erupted, his military training helped him secure a commission in the Union Army, and he was appointed the Colonel and commander of the 3rd Maryland Volunteer Infantry. He led the regimebt in numerous battles, most notably Gettysburg (July 1863). He was honorably mustered out June 24, 1864 when his enlistment expired. (bio by: aphillcsa)
