Sybil Bacon Bassett Holloway was named after her mother Sybil Bacon Bassett, who died a few days after Sybil's and her twin brother John's birth. They were born September 10, 1815 in Rushville, Ontario (later Yates) County, New York, the last of seven children. After his wife's death, Fortunatus Bassett, Sybil's father, placed baby Sybil with Mrs. Lovina Goodrich of Naples, New York and her twin John with a Mr. Ellsworth. The other five children were probably taken care of by their grandmother Sarah Bassett until her death three years later in 1818. After this, Fortunatus placed Clement and Allen with his brother William in Rushville, New York, and took the remaining children Sarah, William and Abigail to Cincinnati, Hamilton County, Ohio. Fortunatus died about a year later.

Sybil was raised by her foster mother Lovina Goodrich until Sybil married at age 21 to Frederick Holloway on February 5, 1837 in Nottawa, St. Joseph County, Michigan. They spent their first year of married life in Sylvania, Ohio, and the second and third in Tecumseh, Hillsdale County, Michigan where their eldest child was born. In April, 1840, they moved to Jonesville, Michigan and in 1852 they moved to a farm in Fayette Township. They were the parents of three boys: George Allen, Leroy Frederick, Cyrus Clement and a girl, Ella who married H.E. Reed. Sybil died February 18, 1895 in Greenwich, Huron, Ohio, at the home of her daughter Ella Reed. Please see the memorial for her husband Frederick M. Holloway for a full biography.
