Medical Pioneer. Founder of modern hospice. During the 1940s, Dame Saunders began a worldwide movement to provide compassionate care of the terminally ill. As a nurse, social worker and doctor, she established new methods of pain control and also focused on spiritual and emotional aspects of the dying by caring for the whole person. This led to the development of palliative care and contemporary hospice. She founded the first hospice using her methods, St. Christopher's Hospice in London, England, in 1967. Dame Saunders lectured widely, wrote articles and books promoting palliative care. She was awarded the Templeton Prize and the Order of Merit by Queen Elizabeth II. In 2001, St. Christopher's Hospice was awarded the Conrad N. Hilton Humanitarian Prize, the world's largest humanitarian award. Dame Cicely's philosophy was simple: "You matter because you are, and you matter to the last moment of your life".
