Duane R. Childers, of Almira, WA passed away February 16, 2007 at Lincoln Hospital, Davenport, WA following a courageous 10-month battle with pancreatic cancer. Duane was born in Spokane, WA on September 21, 1932 to W. Rex and Emma (Reese) Childers. He grew up on the family farm in Almira where his grandparents had homesteaded. Duane attended school in Almira, graduating from Almira High School in 1950. Following graduation from high school, Duane enrolled in Eastern Washington State College in Cheney, where he attended until being drafted into the U. S. Army in 1950. Duane served at Fort Lewis for two years. Upion his honorable discharge in 11952, Duane returned to the family farm. On June 21, 1955 he married LoraBelle Keener. Together they made the farm teir home where they raised their family. Duane spent his life working the farm. He was a great innovator and inventor of many things. Duane could build almost anything that was needed with his own hands. Following a life of agriculture he semi-retired, however Duane always kept his hands close by in the mix. It was at this point in time following semi-retirement that he and LoraBelle took up residence in Yuma, AZ during the winter months. The return of spring marked their return to the farm. However, their days were spent at the family cabin at Hansen Harbor. Duane was a man of many talents. He built the family home in Almira, and later the "cabin" at Hansen Harbor. Weekends were special family times at the cabin where Duane taught his children and grandchildren fishing, boating and everything that he could. He was a talented welder, taking after his father. There are not enough words to describe his passion for fishing on Lake Roosevelt, or hunting at the family farm. All of this, he enjoyed doing with good friends or more importantly his family as he taught his grandchildren the ropes. Duane enjoyed all sports especially following the children and grandchildren's sporting events. He enjoyed the game of golf, amateur radio, and time with his computer. Duane was a member of the Grand Coulee Moose Lodge. He is survived by his loving wife Lorabelle at the family home; a son Dale Childers and his companion Marlene Miliken of Almira; his daughters Deanne Kuehne of Electric City; Danette Pryor and husband John of Electric; Delora Engman and husband Bob of Spokane; his six grandchildren Chelsea Childers of Spokane; Dakota Childers of Ellensburg; Brandon Kuehne of Spokane; Shannon Rauch of Electric City; Zach and Paxton Pryor of Electric City; three great grandchildren Evan Kuehne of Inchelium and Kyler and Korbin Kuehne of Spokane and numerous nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, Duane was preceded in death by a sister Betty Jean Pfeifer. Graveside services were held on Wednesday, February 21 at 1:00 pm at the Almira Cemetery.
