He graduated from Poughkeepsie Academy, studied law, was admitted to the bar and commenced practice in Peekskill, Westchester County, New York in 1807. For thirty years he served as district attorney for Putnam, Rockland, and Westchester Counties. He was a member of the State assembly in 1820 to 1821, served in the State senate 1824 to 1827 and was a judge of the court for the correction of errors 1824 to 1827. Elected as a Whig to the Thirtieth and Thirty-first Congresses, serving March 4, 1847 to March 3, 1851. After his term he resumed the practice of law until his death.
