John Lear fought on the side of the South during the Civil War. He was killed during Porter's Raid at the Bragg Farm. A couple versions of what happened exist. However what is consistent is that he was either thrown, or was unable to mount his horse, and was shot. After the battle he was buried where he fell next to Federal Corp. Stephens. His wife refused to believe he was dead until the pocket of his embroidered shirt was brought to her, accepting his death only when presented with her own needlework.
