He was graduated from Emory and Henry College, Emory, Virginia in 1858, studied law, was admitted to the bar in 1859 and commenced practice in Athens, Tennessee. During the Civil War he enlisted in the Confederate Army and was a Lieutenant Colonel in command of the 16th Battalion, Tennessee Cavalry. After the war he settled at Rhea County, taught school for several years and continued the practice of law. He was a member of the State house of representatives in 1874, served in the State senate in 1878 and as presiding officer in 1879. In 1880 he was presidential elector on the Democratic ticket of Hancock and English and was elected as a Democrat to the Forty-ninth and Fiftieth Congresses, March 4, 1885 to March 3, 1889.
