Harry G.P. Muhme
Jan. 4, 1922 - Feb. 27, 2012

MISHAWAKA - Harry G.P. Muhme, 90, was born on Jan., 4, 1922, in Berlin, Germany, to Dr. Gustave and Emma (Murray) Muhme. When Harry was 2 years old, they immigrated to the United States and settled in Chicago. His mother died when he was 5 and when he was 7, his father married Elsie Krugel. His father died in 1965, and his stepmother died in December 2010 at the age of 100. After losing his father, Harry lived mostly with his aunt and uncle, Hans and Hedy Gast. They lived in St. Joseph, MI, where his uncle owned a bakery and Harry attended Lutheran School. Harry came to Mishawaka where his aunt and uncle now live. Harry and his uncle worked at Kuss Bakery. In 1942, Harry went into the Army and he joined the paratroopers. He was with the 82nd Airborne and on June 6, 1944, D-Day, they jumped into Normandy. In October 1944, he was badly injured in Holland. In January 1946, he was discharged from the Army. After the service, he worked for Walter Baney Plastering and, in 1947, he married Lola M. Baney, who survives. At one time, he owned and operated the OC Donut Shop in Osceola. He worked many years for Prickett's Supermarket and, in 1986, he retired from Laidig Industries, Mishawaka. He had a great sense of humor and even after his stroke in 2001, which took his short-term memory, he still maintained the humor and quick comebacks. He enjoyed sailing, model trains, and he was very proud of his service to his country. Harry and Lola had 5 children; Pamela died as a baby. Those surviving are Jim (June) Muhme of South Bend, Susan (Stan) Garber of Elkhart, Betsy (Mike) Nestor of Wakeman, Ohio, and Judy Stowers (Rick Hanks) of Mishawaka. He also has 2 surviving half sisters, Ingeborg "Micky" Singleterry of California and Isana Seidcheck of Arizona. He has 3 surviving cousins who were like sisters to him, Hildy Shank of Alabama, Ellen Kedik of California and Arlene Pinter of Arizona. He has 9 surviving grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren. Funeral services for Mr. Muhme will be held at 2:00 pm on Friday at Bubb Funeral Chapel, where friends will be received from 6 until 8 pm today and also one hour prior to the funeral on Friday. Burial will follow the service on Friday at Fairview Cemetery, Mishawaka. The family has requested that memorial contributions be made to Milton Adult Day Services, 922 East Colfax Ave., South Bend, IN 46617.
