| Birth: | Dec. 30, 1945 Manchester Lancashire, England | | Death: | Feb. 29, 2012 Indiantown Martin County Florida, USA | Entertainer. Famed as the heartthrob from the music group "The Monkees". Born David Thomas Jones, he began in the entertainment industry at the age of eleven with a role in the popular British serial "Coronation Street". Jones would have a strong desire to become a jockey and at the age of fourteen he pursued that dream. However, his talents as a performer gravitated him to the London stage and later onto Broadway as he received a Tony Award nomination for playing the Artful Dodger in the production of "Oliver!" (1963 to 1964). This success led him to be cast in the newly developed NBC series "The Monkees", which was inspired by The Beatles "A Hard Days Night". Along with Jones included musicians Mike Nesmith, Peter Tork and fellow actor Micky Dolenz. The series ran for two seasons (1966 to 1968) and featured their number one gold records "Last Train to Clarksville" (1966), "I'm a Believer" (1966) and "Daydream Believer" (1967) with Jones as lead singer. They scored another gold hit with "Valerie" (1968, also with Jones as lead vocalist). This period also included their feature film "Head" (1968). The TV series continued to air in reruns for many years which helped maintain their popularity. After the group disbanded in 1969, he recorded as a solo artist in addition to being seen on numerous TV programs including "Rowan and Martin's Laugh-In" and "The Brady Bunch", to name a few. The Monkees reformed during the mid-1980s which included a new album and a nostalgic tour. Over the years, other reunions took place. He was introduced to a new TV generation in a 2009 episode of "SpongeBob SquarePants". When not performing, Jones enjoyed his passion for horses on his Pennsylvania farm and in Florida. He died from a heart attack. (bio by: C.S.)
