In addition to being editor of the New York Tribune, he was also U.S. minister to France from 1889 to 1892 and the unsuccessful Republican vice-presidential candidate in 1892 (with President Benjamin Harrison). He was later the U.S. ambassador to Great Britain from 1905 until his death.
