Rollin was the 6th of twelve children on Abram and Mary Lindsey McNutt. He was born in Blandford, Ma on Nov 19, 1819, the fifth generation of the McNutt family in America. At the age of 14 he moved with his parents to what is now Ohio. In 1843, he married Melissa House, daughter of Almiren and Melecent Bridge House. While living in Ohio, he was a successful gunsmith. In 1856 he moved to Wisconsin where he built a mill & worked as a millwright. After his son Walter moved to Kansas, he and Melissa followed. Rollin filed a homestead entry on June 5, 1878. He died on April 29, 1898 in Ash Rock Township, Kansas.
