Mayor of Edmonton. He was born in Minnesoda, Manitoba, Canada; son of Peter and Margaret (nee Murchison) Blatchford, both of Scottish-Canadian heritage. His family moved to Alberta by ox-cart, arriving in Edmonton in the 1890s. During his professional career he sold newspapers and periodicals, operated a grist mill during the Klondike rush, worked at the Edmonton Power plant and worked as an insurance broker. He served as an alderman for the city of Edmonton from 1922 to 1923 and then as mayor from 1924 to 1926. He was elected to the Canadian House of Commons in 1926 as a Liberal for East Edmonton where he served until 1930. Ran again for mayor of Edmonton in November 1932 only to be defeated. Five months later he suffered a nervous breakdown and took his own life. His body was found in the North Saskatchewan River on April 22, 1933 two days after he went missing. He was married to Grace Lauder Walker on December 19, 1904 and they had two sons and one daughter. One son, Howard Peter "Cowboy" Blatchford went on to become a highly decorated flying ace in the Royal Canadian Air Force during the Second World War. An Edmonton airport, Blatchford Field, is named after him. (bio by: DXA)
