William Paul Melhorn was born in Belle Plaine, Shawano, Wisconsin. His father Paul Herman Melhorn was born in Germany, as was his mother Ida Clara Bock. William studied at the University of Wisconsin, Madison. He married Miriam Sebastian in 1937. They had one daughter Joan Lee Melhorn (Lapour)who studied at Occidental College.
