Twila Jean Stone
(July 5, 1933 - February 16, 2013)
Twila Jean (Anderson) Stone, 79, loving wife, mother, grandmother and friend, passed away at Emporia Presbyterian Manor on Saturday, February 16, 2013 after a brave two-year battle with cancer.
She was born to Joe and Hazel (Rogers) Anderson on July 5, 1933 in Kearny County, Kansas. She graduated from Lakin High School in 1951. In 1955, she graduated from Kansas State Teachers College (now ESU) with a B.S. in Education. She was married to Lloyd A. Stone on December 22, 1956. He preceded her in death on Wednesday, February 13, 2013.
Survivors include three sons, Benjamin of Emporia, John and wife Holly of Overland Park, and James of Frisco, Texas; four grandchildren, Whitney and Morgan, Frisco, Texas and Rylie and Jackson of Overland Park; and three sisters, Lois Bailey, of Lee's Summit, Missouri, Doris (Ted) Harder, of Salina, Kansas, and June (Jack) Hovorka, of Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. Many nieces, nephews, and friends also survive. A sister, Neva Jo, died in infancy.
Twila taught school in Salina, Allen, rural Lyon County, and Cimarron. She stopped teaching to become a fulltime wife and mother. After her children were all in school, she worked for the Lyon County Health Department as a Healthy Start visitor, a job she dearly loved.
She was a member of First United Methodist Church in Emporia and very active in her church circle. She served on the church board, was secretary of the 56 Followers Sunday School class for over 30 years, and was on the board of Campus Ministry. She was past president of the Lyon County Republican Women and served as secretary of the Newman Regional Health Auxiliary for over 15 years. Being the generous soul that she was, she donated blood to the American Red Cross 152 times, totaling 19 gallons.
Twila was an avid golfer, greatly enjoyed playing with family and friends and played regularly until her health prevented it. She also loved attending Emporia State athletic events with Lloyd and friends.
The family will receive friends at First United Methodist Church, Emporia, from 9:00 A.M. to 10:00 A.M. on Wednesday, February 20, 2013, with the service to follow at 10:30 A.M. Interment will be at Memorial Lawn Cemetery, Emporia.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to the Twila J. Stone Teaching Scholarship at Emporia State University, First United Methodist Church, Hand in Hand Hospice, or the Lady Hornet Basketball team. Contributions may be sent in care of Roberts-Blue-Barnett Funeral Home.
