Aunt Doris was the only sibling of my father, Robert Eugene Guth, who died 15 months before she did. About 9 months before she died, she had a bad case of Shingles (on her face). Before being married to Robert Brewer, she got married in 1947 to Donald MacBride. Donald's father was born in San Francisco, CA, which is probably how Doris first came about moving to California, where she lived for the rest of her life.
Doris M. Brewer, a retired Cal State Northridge radio, television and film professor, has died at a Glendale hospital. She was 67.
A longtime Sun Valley resident, Mrs. Brewer died on Thursday, July 9, 1992 of leukemia, said her husband, Robert Brewer.
Born in Meadville, PA, she earned bachelor's and master's degrees from Michigan State University and in 1946 came to California, where she taught high school in Newhall and Whittier. Mrs. Brewer later taught in Burbank, at Jordan Middle School and Burroughs High School, where she was an English teacher and speech coach.
After earning a doctorate from UCLA in 1970, she taught speech communication at Cal State Hayward. She returned to the Los Angeles area in 1973 to teach the same subject at Ambassador College in Pasadena, where she also was director of the school's public radio station. In 1978, Mrs. Brewer began teaching radio, television and film classes at CSUN. She retired in 1984.
Mrs. Brewer was a member of American Women in Radio and Television, which once voted her Woman of the Year, and also appeared in television commercials and performed in little theater.
