Brady was born the second of three children to Joseph Hollingsworth and Adeline nee Taliaferro; the second marriage for both. He was born in the Rozetta community in Henderson County, Illinois and died at Macomb, Illinois. A sister, Jane Elizabeth, was born two years before him and died around the same time that Brady was born. A younger brother, Joseph Grant, died from a concussion in 1879 when he was 14 years old.
The first marriage of his father, to Rachel Vestal, produced seven sons. The first marriage of his mother, to William Bell, produced three sons and four daughters. Both of his parents are buried at the Rozetta cemetery in Rozetta, Henderson County, Illinois.
On 28 Dec 1898, in Mercer County, Illinois, Brady married Kate Strong, who lived for eight years after Brady died. They had two children: Cecelia (1899-1995)and Carl (1902-1982).
Brady was a cabinet maker by profession.
