He was Capt. of Company K, 56th NC Regiment. According to the book "HISTORIES OF THE SEVERAL REGIMENTS AND BATTALIONS FROM NORTH CAROLINA IN THE GREAT WAR 1861-65", by Members of the Respective Commands, printed in 1901, under the section "Fifty-Sixth Regiment" by Robert D. Graham, Captain Company D; it states that "Frank R. Alexander, Captain, April 1862, mortally wounded in night charge of 17 June, 1864, at Petersburg, and died 20 June, 1864 (Mecklenburg)".
I'm not sure if the mention of Mecklenburg County refers to the county he was from (since he was from Mecklenburg Co., NC), or where he died. Since it was only 3 (or 2 if the headstone dates are correct) days from the time he was wounded until he died, I assumed he died in one of the general hospitals in Petersburg, VA.
The book may have the incorrect date of death, but his headstone states he was wounded 17 Jun and he died 19 June - thus he wasn't killed in battle, but was wounded in battle and died of those wounds a few days later.
