Mildred L. Mason Waite, the last surviving sibling and sixth of the 12 Mason children born to Lester Vernon and Lillie Belle Gage Mason, passed away on Oct. 4, 2012 at the Sterling Regional MedCenter. Mildred was 92 years young at the time of her passing. She had been a Logan County resident all of her life. Visitation will be from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 9, at Chaney-Reager Funeral Home. Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, Oct. 10, at Christ United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Jodie Harless officiating. Interment will be at Riverside Cemetery.
Mildred Lillian was born March 3, 1920, on the Dr. Suatzlander farm six miles east of Peetz, where she lived for the first eight years of her life. Her family then moved a few times over the next five years before finally settling at Red Lion where they lived and farmed for the next 10 years. She attended school through the eighth grade at the Gage and Danrode schools near Peetz and at the Red Lion school near Crook.
Mildred met the love of her life, Herman "Arnold" Waite while living at Red Lion. She and Arnold were married Feb. 2, 1938, at Sedgwick and celebrated 50 years of "happily ever after" prior to Arnold's graduation to Heaven on Dec. 21, 1988. She and Arnold have two sons, George and Dean Waite.
During her lifetime Mildred wore many hats. She was always a hard-working woman and used that ethic as a housewife and mother. Mildred also worked away from home doing private housekeeping, taking in ironing, as well as cleaning, cooking and caring for her elderly parents.
She and Arnold worked as dorm parents at NJC for a period of time in the 1960s.
They job shared as custodian and caretakers of the Prairie School in New Raymer from 1973 to 1981. Mildred and Arnold also worked on the Budin ranch for Paul and Helen Budin for a number of years. She and Arnold then again worked as a team doing custodial work for Christ United Methodist Church in Sterling where they were members. They held this position for six years until her husband's failing health made it necessary to retire. Mildred was also a member of the Atwood Methodist Church prior to moving to Sterling. She had been a member since 1958 and was baptized March 16, 1959.
After retiring Mildred and Arnold resided in Desert Village. She was happy there caring for her husband until his death and after as well. She derived great pleasures from cooking large family and holiday meals and baking. She baked nearly daily making homemade bread, her famous sour cream brownies and delicious pies for her family, for the church and for her neighbors. She also kept her freezer filled with goodies for the grandkids, great-grands and nieces and nephews who might stop by.
Some of her other hobbies included reading, collecting poetry, painting the inside and outside of her house, including her yard ornaments and flower boxes. She enjoyed doing her own lawn mowing and yard work as long as she was able. She delighted in keeping others smiling with her stories and her humorous turn of phrases. She loved being a help to others however and whenever she could.
Mildred was a member of the G.N.I. Club, a member of Eastern Star and an honorary member of the Methodist Quilting group.
Mildred is survived by her sons, George Waite and wife Barb of Atwood and Dean Waite and wife Nova of Hugo; four grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and her first great-great-grandchild, who is expected in December of this year. Also surviving are two sisters-in-law; many loving nieces, nephews; and greats to numerous to list. She was well and truly loved by all who knew her and will be greatly missed.
Mildred was preceded in death by her husband, her parents and all of her siblings.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial contributions be made to Christ United Methodist Church in Sterling in Mildred's memory.
